IAN AND JASPER SAT on the couch in Jasperâs office with Ellie between them as she told them about the man on the dance floor and the power he had given off. Neither one had sensed someone like she was describing but many types of magic could hide power.
âOkay, Ellie. We will have a look around and see if we can figure out what is going on. Itâs possible that Magnus could pick up on something. Do you want to head back down with us or stay up here?â
Ellie glowered at Ianâs tone. âI am not a little girl, Ian. Itâs not me that he had the problem with. I am going back down to the floor to have some fun.â With those words, she stood and walked out of the office, passing Mackenzie in the doorway.
Jasper laughed, as the woman who drove him to distraction, stormed out of the office. He motioned to Mackenzie to come in.
âHey, Mac. Is everything okay? You look like you want to punch a wall or something.â
Mackenzie stalked to the bar in the corner of Jasperâs office, turned toward her bosses and raised an eyebrow toward the scotch. She smiled when Ian waved for her to go ahead and pour drinks. She tossed one back as Jasper walked over and shut the door before returning to his seat on the couch and accepting one of the drinks from her. The guys watched as she drank down another scotch before she held one out to Ian, poured one more for herself and settled into the chair across from them. They glanced at each other with trepidation. This was not a common occurrence for their levelheaded Mac.
Jasper placed his elbows on his knees as he leaned forward with the glass between his fingers. âWhatâs wrong, Mac? Did you run into a problem on the floor?â
They watched as she sipped the liquor and seemed to shrink in front of them. If there was one thing that both of them were certain of, it was that Mackenzie Lewis never shrank back from anyone.
âSo you guys know that I have spent time on a personal journey over the last several years, right?â
Ian crossed his ankle over his knee as he replied, âYes. It has never been a problem for us to let you take time off for your quest. Did you need our assistance with something? You have never really talked about it with us but you are more than welcome to.â
Mackenzie knew that she could talk to them about Mattie, but it was a fine line because she couldnât talk about anything that related to the plans that the asshole vampire had forced on her. She took a deep breath and faced the men that she considered family.
âOn my sixteenth birthday, my parents were murdered in my bedroom and my twelve-year-old brother, Matthew was kidnapped by a vampire. The vampire left me a note, saying that my parents had died because of a deal my father had made with them, but my brother was taken because my dad had killed one of his vampires.
